Court Upholds Jury Verdict of Willful Patent Infringement and Increases Damages Irvine, CA, October 12, 2004 - Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear announced that the U.S. District Court in Orange County upheld a jury verdict that Tyco Unit U.S. Surgical Corporation had willfully infringed a patent owned by the firm's client, Applied Medical Resources Corp. The patent was on a medical device known as a trocar, used by surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgery. Because of the jury's willfulness finding, the court, through Judge Cormac Carney, increased the $43.5 million jury verdict by almost $11 million. The $54 million award does not include attorney fees, costs, and interest.
