JOSEPH RE OF KNOBBE MARTENS OLSON & BEAR NAMED ONE OF TOP INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWYERS BY CALIFORNIA LAWYER

Joseph R. Re, a partner of Orange County's largest purely intellectual property law firm, Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear, has been named as a recipient of the prestigious California Lawyer lawyers of the Year (CLAY) Awards, appearing in the magazine's March 2005 issue. Annually, lawyers who "changed law, broke new ground in various practice areas and business sectors, and substantially influenced public policy" during the past year are awarded with the honor. Re was recognized as a top intellectual property lawyer in California for his outstanding work in patent law and litigation, which was deemed by the magazine as having "a profound, far-reaching impact" at present and extending into coming years.

"I am honored to be have been ranked as one of California Lawyer's lawyers of the Year," said Re of his award. "It is a privilege to be recognized among the best lawyers in California."

In two medical device patent-infringement cases in 2004, Re obtained jury verdicts of $134.5 million for Masimo Corp. in Los Angeles, and $43.5 million for Applied Medical Resources Corp. in Orange County. In both cases, juries found that different units of Tyco International, a leading manufacturer of medical device products in the United States, had willfully infringed on the patents of Masimo Corp. and Applied Medical Resources Corp. The Masimo case involved four patents for read-through-motion pulse oximeters, devices for calculating the oxygen saturation of arterial blood in noncomatose patients, whereas the Applied Medical Resources case involved a patented trocar device used in laparoscopic surgery.

A litigation partner in Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear's headquarter office in Orange County, Re handles intellectual property disputes involving patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights in a wide range of technologies and products, including computer peripherals, electronics, software, biotechnology, medical devices and laboratory equipment. He has repeatedly been featured as a leading patent attorney in the United States by Euromoney Legal Media Group, and has received the highest rating (AV) from Martindale-Hubbell. Re has written and spoken extensively on patent law and litigation procedure, and has authored numerous appellate briefs on behalf of the American Intellectual Property Law Association as amicus curiae. Re received his law degree from St. John's University School of Law in New York in 1985, and graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University College of Engineering.

Re was one of 41 lawyers throughout California who were honored by the Awards in categories including Appellate, Government/Public Policy, Criminal Law, Employment, Entertainment Law, Energy, Civil Rights, Pro Bono, Litigation, Law Practice Management, Transactional, Intellectual Property, Immigration, Environmental/Land Use, and Administration of Justice.
