Job Title: Patent Scientist
Status: Exempt

General Summary:

Patent Scientists work on complex assignments wherein substantial judgment and initiative are required. These projects may very in length from only a few hours to several months, which aid in the successful prosecution of patent applications through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and foreign patent offices. Each Patent Scientist is required to participate in many different aspects of the patent application process. The Patent Scientist works directly with partners of the firm, as well as associate attorneys; working as a team, they divide tasks in the preparation of the individual application. Patent Scientist are expected to communicate effectively and efficiently with attorneys, office staff, inventors, and patent examiners in the USPTO and foreign attorneys on a daily basis while appropriately representing the firm’s professional atmosphere.

Each client brings extremely novel and diverse technologies to our firm. Therefore the candidate must be able to receive a client file, educate themselves on the related technology in a brief period of time, and be prepared to create technical figures and explain them in written form for a patent application. The position requires a candidate to possess the ability to teach the related technology in a way that is concise and vividly descriptive.

Responsibilities and Duties:  
1. Researching new client technology to see if it, in fact, possesses any “new” technology.
2. Traveling to meet attorneys/clients/inventors to discuss inventions and/or applications.
3. Reviewing issued patents for attorneys to assist in patent protection.
4. Creating technical diagrams and drawings from which the patent applications follow.
5. Writing the patent applications with clarity and technical accuracy.
6. Preparing the official correspondence with the USPTO regarding each of your cases.
7. Communicating with foreign attorneys to aid in the prosecution of an application.

To be successful in this position the candidate must be a strong communicator, both written and oral. They must be able to work independently, with a large amount of working freedom, while still communicating progress to attorneys and assistants in a timely fashion. Each Patent Scientist should have an interest in intellectual property law. Each Patent Scientist will participate in a patent law course and will be required to pass the United States Patent Agent Bar Exam within a predetermined amount of time.

Education and Experience:

  • A degree in Optics, or a degree in either Physics or Electrical Engineering with experience in Optics.
  • Must be independently motivated to succeed and measure success on a team level.
  • Qualified candidates will possess exceptional oral and written communication skills.
