Job Title: Director of Business Development Supervisor’s Title: Business Development Committee Chair, Firm Administrator Status: Exempt Location: Orange County – This position depends on the ability of the employee to work closely with attorneys and staff during regularly scheduled hours. This position will require travel.
General Summary: Work with Partnership to conceptualize, develop, implement and administer the Firm’s marketing strategy and program, including business development, public and client relations, and client data management. Lead the lawyers in the research and preparation of strategies and marketing plans to develop new clients and practice areas; serve as liaison with the media regarding Firm news; manage outside vendors and consultants including public relations, marketing, technology, and graphic design; prepare the Firm’s business development budget; oversee the development and maintenance of client data; and oversee the Firm’s brand identity and collateral materials.
Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Lead the Business Development Committee in Firm-wide marketing efforts. 1.1. Strategize with Committee members to develop an effective program. 1.2. Conduct or obtain market research and analyses to support development efforts. 1.3. Collaborate with individual lawyers, practice groups and offices to develop consistent client-focused marketing and communication strategies. 1.4. Develop processes, measurements, information systems, and other resources necessary to ensure the program operates efficiently and cost effectively. 1.5. Track activities of competitors to identify new, effective, and ineffective techniques in shaping the Firm’s business development initiatives. 1.6. Work with lawyers to develop and implement individual business development plans. 1.7. Identify and respond to RFP’s and requests for SOQ’s. 1.8. Serve as a member of the Business Development Committee. 1.9. Oversee Business Development staff.
2. Develop and oversee all Business Development sponsored seminars and events. 2.1. Work with Partners to improve client development through strategically planned/timed seminars and events. 2.2. Investigate opportunities to promote existing practice specialties and enter new practice areas through cross-selling opportunities. 2.3. Create marketing and client presentations. 2.4. Ensure all events are completed timely and within budget.
3. Manage and optimize the Firm’s Business Development budget. 3.1. Work with Partners to create a budget which allows for objectives of program to be achieved while staying within Firm’s guideline for expenditures. 3.2. Ensure budget is created in a timely manner. 3.3. Keep Partners and Committee members informed to avoid budget overruns.
4. Develop relationships with media outlets. 4.1. Build positive and productive relationships with business, legal, and industry press. 4.2. Solicit opportunities to have Firm information published. 4.3. Liaise with media regarding Firm news and events. 4.4. Work with Partners to provide informative articles. 4.5. Draft press releases and solicit opportunities to ensure Firm achievements and accomplishments are widely publicized.
5. Oversee creation and publication of Firm marketing materials. 5.1. Lead the development and manage content for brand collateral such as brochures and other print and web materials to promote the Firm and provide maximum name recognition. 5.2. Review materials to ensure accuracy and consistency in message and look. 5.3. Liaise with marketing/advertising consultant(s) and publishers to develop and disseminate advertisements to promote business development initiatives.
6. Development of client data. 6.1. Oversee the development and maintenance of an integrated data base management system for promotional communications and strategy development. 6.2. Carefully evaluate responses to Firm mailings and implement necessary changes.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
Education and Experience: Position requires a bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations or communication and a minimum of three years demonstrated experience in managing the marketing program of a large law firm.
