I chose Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear because I wanted a firm that
would allow me to become involved in all phases of patent litigation,
including trial and appellate work. Most firms I interviewed with did
not give me this option because their practices were strictly departmentalized:
one section did patent work, another group of general practitioners ran
the litigation, and yet another did the appellate work. My interests did
not fit neatly into any one department. I wanted to be involved in all
aspects of patent litigation, including appellate work. Knobbe Martens
gave me this opportunity. At Knobbe Martens, there are no departments.
You can do litigation, trial and appellate work. The firm does not pigeonhole
you into a particular practice. The only boundaries to your practice will
be the ones you decide to construct.
As a former clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit,
I was particularly attracted to the firm because of the firms emphasis
on the intellectual aspects of IP practice. For example, the firm offers
a weekly educational lunch program, where lawyers from the firm present
summaries and analyses of recent cases of interest in the field of intellectual
property. The firm also encourages associates to write articles for publication
in legal journals and to take advantage of various public-speaking opportunities
with various bar associations. While other firms are primarily concerned
with how much each associate is billing, Knobbe Martens places a premium
on developing well-rounded and skillful lawyers.
