Workshop Information:

Standards promulgating organizations have significant impact on intellectual property strategies in the telecommunications industry. The presentation will examine consequences of licensing requirements imposed by standards bodies and the effect that the requirements have on the development of an intellectual property portfolio. Real life examples taken from the communications field will be used to illustrate the consequences of participation in a standards body on an intellectual property portfolio. Strategies that can be adopted to address those consequences will be covered. The tradeoffs to be evaluated when considering whether to join a standard body will be addressed. Also, included will be intellectual property licensing and development strategies for operating in a field governed by industry standards. Additionally, the consequences of implementing a standard in a product and licensing in connection with consortiums managing the property rights associated with the standards will be discussed.
