John Amster
General Manager
Intellectual Ventures

John Amster is a General Manager at Intellectual Ventures where he focuses on a variety of projects relating to intellectual property and invention. Prior to joining Intellectual Ventures, Mr. Amster was a Managing Director for Ocean Tomo where he founded the firm’s M&A Advisory practice and completed transactions with an aggregate value of approximately $40 million. Before Ocean Tomo, Mr. Amster was Vice President and Secretary at InterTrust Technologies where he worked on a variety of large intellectual property transactions. Prior to InterTrust, Mr. Amster was an associate in the Transactional Group of Weil Gotshal & Manges, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions, equity investments, venture capital financings, as well as technology and intellectual property licensing.  In addition to his work, Mr. Amster is a Director of the Lone Mountain Children’s Center and is involved in numerous other charitable organizations in San Francisco.

Christopher Barber

Mr. Barber is a 17 year veteran of Wall Street. Most recently Mr. Barber was Managing Director and Group Head in charge of UBS’s Large Cap Technology Investment Banking effort, providing corporate finance and advisory services to the 30 largest U.S. based technology companies. Prior to that Mr. Barber was Managing Director and Group Head in charge of debt private placements and leverage finance at Prudential Securities. Mr. Barber also spent many years at Citigroup originating structured debt and leveraged finance solutions.

William Bunker

William Bunker is a partner with Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. His practice includes patent prosecution and other forms of intellectual property prosecution for the mechanical, aerospace and medical device industries. Mr. Bunker has been a contributing author on intellectual property law for the Los Angeles Daily Journal and is an active member in the Orange County Law Association, Los Angeles County Patent Law Association, San Diego County Patent Law Association, Orange County Bar Association and Riverside County Bar Association.

Richard Ferrari

In 1991, Richard Ferrari became the CEO of Cardiovascular Imaging Systems. As CEO, he orchestrated a successful IPO and ultimately sold the company to Boston Scientific for $125 million. Mr. Ferrari was a co-founder of CardioThoracic Systems Inc. (CTSI), and as CEO, he led the company to an initial public offering in only 7 months, the fastest of any medical technology company in history. In 1996 he founded Saratoga Ventures, a venture capital partnership that has provided seed financing to several successful companies. Mr. Ferrari was also the co-founder of Integrated Vascular Systems, an early stage femoral artery closure company and Angiosense, a needle-free, jet injection, local drug delivery company. He is the recipient of the Mallinckrodt Award for Excellence in Medicine and twice a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Philip Hartstein

Phil Hartstein is the practice leader for the Ocean Tomo Analytics group which services clients at all stages, from venture funded to Fortune 100 companies, in developing and optimizing their IP portfolios. Mr. Hartstein has experience working with multiple venture capital groups across the country and has participated in extensive diligence studies. Prior to joining Ocean Tomo, he founded IP Capital Management (IPCM) to service a wider technology market as a primary interface between corporate management and IP counsel.

Mark Hatfield

Mark Hatfield’s role at Motorola is to identify, execute and manage strategic, minority-equity investments which are strategic to Motorola’s core and emerging businesses. Prior to Ventures, Mr. Hatfield spent three years in Chicago, where he headed up Strategy & Business Development for the CIO and the IT Organization. There, he accomplished establishing a program to identify and leverage Motorola’s IT asset base to generate value for the enterprise and to commercialize IP. Prior to Motorola, Mr. Hatfield worked at various corporate business development and IT roles at Bell Canada Enterprises and at the bank of Montreal in Toronto, Canada.

Lee W. Henderson, Ph.D.

Lee Henderson is a partner at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. He specializes in intellectual property protection for electrical and computer-related technologies. Dr. Henderson’s practice has a strong international component with clients in Canada, Europe and Asia. He currently represents clients in a wide range of technologies, including quantum computing, radar, antennas, soft computing, RAID and network storage systems, network architectures and protocols, medical systems, and wireless communications. Dr. Henderson was formally a senior engineer with General Dynamics designing stealth aircraft. He has also published a large number of computer codes, articles, and reports related to antennas, radar, and software design. Dr. Henderson is also a member of such professional affiliations as the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE).

Daniel Henry

Prior to joining Altitude, Mr. Henry spent 20 years in the legal profession as a litigation specialist in the area of Intellectual Property. Most recently Mr. Henry was with the New York office of Baker Botts LLP where he helped manage five IP lawsuits to trial in the last three years. Before Baker Botts, Mr. Henry worked with some of the top IP firms in the country including Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto, Schulte Roth& Zabel, and Darby & Darby. While with the firm of Pavia & Harcourt Mr. Henry assisted in the establishment of their IP practice group. Mr. Henry has extensive knowledge of IP law and practice. Mr. Henry received his BA in History from Columbia University.

James Hill, M.D.

James W. Hill is a partner at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. He specializes in medical devices, biotechnology, patent prosecution, and litigation. Dr. Hill currently holds a position as Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles. He has performed research in the following areas: hemoglobin biochemistry; ophthalmology (vitreoretinal surgery); digital radiography; intraoperative MRI for neurosurgical applications; image fusion techniques for CT, MRI, PET scanning, and arteriography; and radiosurgery for malignant brain tumors. Dr. Hill is the author of articles in medical
journals such as American Family Physician and Investigative Radiology. 

Niloofar Howe

Niloo Howe is a Principal and a member of the Paladin Homeland Security Fund Investment Committee. Ms. Howe’s responsibilities include the development and implementation of new investment opportunities for both Paladin Homeland Security Fund and Paladin Capital Partners Fund. In addition, she assists in providing strategic oversight and monitoring of the firm’s investments. Prior to joining Paladin, Ms. Howe served as Principal at Zone Ventures, a Los Angeles based venture capital firm. Previously, Ms. Howe worked with McKinsey & Company as a strategic consultant. In that capacity, she worked with senior management of Fortune 500 companies in the retail/consumer goods, technology and heathcare sectors on issues of strategy, new product/market entry, change management/turnaround and electronic commerce. Her previous experience also includes working as an attorney with O’Melveny & Myers. Ms. Howe represents Paladin on the board of directors of SafeView, Inc., and assists in the strategic oversight and monitoring of the firm's investments.

Dale Hunt, Ph.D.

Dale Hunt is a partner in Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear’s San Francisco office. He specializes in patent prosecution in agriculture, biotechnology, medical devices and industrial technology. Dr. Hunt’s practice involves patent strategy advice, patent prosecution, licensing, and opinion advice to clients in technical fields such as plant biotechnology, genomics, medical biotechnology, and water purification technology and materials. He represents a wide variety of clients that include startup companies, plant breeders, universities and research institutes, and major multinational corporations. Dr. Hunt has written many articles on intellectual property and is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), among other professional
organizations.

Mir Imran

Mir Imran has joined DFJ ePlanet as a Venture Partner and Senior Advisor in its Silicon Valley office, where he focuses on life sciences and technology investments on a global basis. Mr. Imran founded numerous medical and high technology companies and serves as a Director for Surface Genesis, CardioVasc, NovaSonics, JStreetData.com and IntraPace. After three years of research in bioengineering at the Rutgers Medical School, he developed numerous medical devices and obtained close to 200 patents in his name. One of his high profile medical inventions is the EEG monitoring sensor array that the American astronaut John Glenn used on his latest space mission. Mr. Imran is also an active angel investor and a special limited partner in several prominent venture funds, as well as a charter member of the Indus (TIE) Group, an Indian technology organization that has been responsible for starting a number of companies in Silicon Valley.

Prior to being named Chief Patent Counsel for Medtronic Vascular, Inc., Michael Jaro held a variety of positions supporting Medtronic’s IP efforts, including European Patent Counsel, located in Maastricht, the Netherlands. He joined Medtronic from the law firm of Willian Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. Medtronic Vascular, Inc. is a medical technology company providing lifelong solutions for people with chronic disease. Medtronic’s vascular division makes and sells catheters, stents and stent grafts.

Stephen Jensen

Stephen Jensen is a partners with Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. Mr. Jensen’s practice emphasizes intellectual property litigation, negotiation, licensing and strategic counseling matters. He has handled extensive and diverse cases, involving virtually all aspects of intellectual property, and has negotiated and drafted diverse license and other technology related agreements between companies worldwide. Mr. Jensen represents clients in a wide range of technologies, such as medical devices and instrumentation, semiconductors, computer hardware and software, complex digital signal processing, telecommunications including wireless, antennas, video and audio processing, optics, solid state cooling and heating, control systems, and other areas. Michael Kirk became Executive Director of AIPLA in April 1995. During his tenure with the Association, he has testified before the United States Congress on numerous occasions, and has continued to participate in discussions on the protection of intellectual property in a variety of international fora. Prior to joining AIPLA, Mr. Kirk served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Deputy Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, capping off a career of more than 30 years in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Andrew Ramer is responsible for the development, marketing and overall operations of the Ocean Tomo Patent Ratings business. Prior to joining Ocean Tomo, he spent five years with Motorola Ventures, the venture capital arm of Motorola where he spearheaded Motorola's divestiture initiative for its private holdings, including a complete internally run auction process. In addition, he participated in eight boards of directors and has publicly spoken on venture capital issues on multiple occasions. Mr. Ramer has also co-authored or contributed to publications for the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education and the Massachusetts Practice Series on Collections Law.

Peter Rule

Peter Rule joined EKOS Corporation in 2001 and successfully led the company in raising $21 million in private financing in October of 2001. Previously, Mr. Rule was President and CEO of PercuSurge, Inc. In his five years with the company, he raised $50M in private financing. PercuSurge was the first privately financed medical device company in the history of cardiology to perform a randomized control trial with its technology. Mr. Rule’s previous work experience also included Senior Marketing positions with IMED Corporation in San Diego, California and American Hospital Supply Corporation.

Paul Sestili

Mr. Sestili has 15 years of professional experience, the last six in Venture Capital. Most recently, Mr. Sestili spent five years with APV Technology Partners, and early-stage Venture Capital firm in Palo Alto. He has previously managed Chevron Corporation’s first venture fund. Mr. Sestili has founded two start-up companies, and was an engineer for six years at the beginning of his career. Mr. Sestili has a BS from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Georgetown University.

Prior to joining Acacia, Mr. Treska was General Counsel for SRS Labs, Inc., a technology licensing company specializing in audio enhancement, from 1996 though 2004.
